Competition continues Saturday.
PHILADELPHIA (April 24, 1998) — The second day of the Penn Relays ended Friday, withthe Kentucky team of Andrew Channer, Dwight Phillips, Tom Johnson andLittleton Ward coming in third in their heat of the 4×100 relay with a time of41.34 seconds. They were beat out by the teams from Florida and Auburn.
In the distance medley, the Wildcat’s relay team of Wes Freeland, JudeHammond, Jack Morgan and Matt Igyarto came in 13th in their heat with atime of 10.05:56. Princeton finished first in their heat with a time of 9.54:67.UK’s 4×400 relay team of Mark Miller, Tom Jonsson, Jeff Ellis, DwightPhillips finished third with a time of 3:11.33. The teams from Texas Christianand Georgia Tech beat them out for the top two places.
In Thursday’s action, UK’s Shonna Johnson finished second in her heat ofthe 400 hurdles with a time of 61.93 seconds. She was beat by Kent State,sJulia Laiuvara who finished with a time of 60.50 seconds.
Also competing in Thursday’s events was Kentucky’s 4×100 relay team ofTeniqua Broughton, Roshell Russell, Alexis Simmons and Ola Sesay. Theyfinished third in their heat with a time of 47.12 seconds. The same team alsofinished seventh in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3.50:04. First-place honorswent to George Mason. During yesterday,s field event competition, twoWildcats competed in the high jump. Ola Sesay and Valerie Johnson finishedfifth and sixth, respectively. Their jumps of 5.98 feet and 5.87 feet weren’tgood enough to beat the number-one finisher Lacena Golding of Auburn,who jumped 6.34 feet.
Other Wildcat field event participants were Heidi Quast, who finished eighthin the shot put competition with a throw of 13.22 feet, and Beth Burkett,who finished third in the javelin throw after a hurl of 143.03 feet.
Competition resumes Saturday morning, with track events beginning at 7a.m. and field events at 9 a.m.
