Kentucky tops The Citadel, 2-0.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (September 18, 1998) — The University of Kentucky men’s soccer teambroke its five-game losing streak Friday night, topping The Citadel 2-0 in theopening round of the Kentucky Invitational Tournament.
A UK Soccer Complex crowd of 1,153 saw the Cats capture their first winof the season behind two penalty kicks by Lee Baker in the 75th and 81stminutes. Goalkeeper Brian O’Leary made four saves to post his first shutoutof the season for UK.
Kentucky (1-5) held a 20-6 shot advantage over The Citadel (1-5) inadvancing to Sunday’s 2 p.m. final.
Meeting the Cats in the final will be undefeated Winthrop, who claimed a 2-1victory over Virginia Tech in the KIT opener. Wintrop (6-0) struck on aGareth Hayden header in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead at the half.Virginia Tech (1-5) evened the score at 1-1 on a Stanislav Licul blast in the61st minute before Paul Hayward gave Winthrop the go-ahead goal on aheader in the 76th minute for the 2-1 win. Virginia Tech now faces TheCitadel in the KIT consolation match at noon on Sunday. The championshipwill be decided at 2 p.m., when UK takes on Winthrop at the UK SoccerComplex.
