Kentucky forward Carrie Staber registered two first-half goals to pace theWildcats to a 4-0 win over Detroit at the UK Soccer Complex, Friday night.With the win, Kentucky improved to 5-5-1, while Detroit fell to 5-6-0overall. It was the third straight win for UK.
The game-winner came just four minutes into the game as a combinationfrom Kim LaBelle and Jennifer Reese led to Staber’s one-touch shot pastDetroit goalkeeper Kristi Elliot, putting the Wildcats up 1-0. Staber added asecond goal in the 22nd minute after taking a long pass from defender AllisonPeppers and racing half the field to convert a one-on-one opportunity againstElliot to give UK a 2-0 halftime lead.
Freshman Annie Gage put UK ahead 3-0 in the 64th minute, blasting aLaBelle cross into the open Detroit net. UK midfielder Brooke Hergesellgave the Wildcats the final margin with a 25-yard blast in the 76th minute offan assist from freshman Mandy Pielage.
For Hergesell it was her fourth straight game with a goal. Freshmangoalkeeper Beth Wells played the full 90 minutes for the second strightgame, picking up UK’s first shutout of the season.
“We came out tonight and had a another solid game,” Kentucky head coachWarren Lipka said. “Everybody played hard and we were able to convert onour chances and put some goals on the board.”
UK held a 19-7 advantage in shots and posted six corner kicks to Detroit’s2. Wells was forced to make only one save.
Kentucky continues action on Sunday, as the Wildcats play host toWashington State at 1 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
