COLUMBIA, S.C. – Kentucky forward Kim LaBelle scored nine minutes into sudden-death overtime to propel the UK women’s soccer team to a 4-3 win over South Carolina, Sunday.
With the win, Kentucky improves to 2-3-1, 1-1 in SEC play. LaBelle’s game-winner came just minutes after she connected on a shot to tie the score at 3-3 with under four minutes remaining in regulation. The Wildcats jumped ahead early when BrookeHergesell headed in a Jen McMaster corner kick to give UK a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of play. However, South Carolina would tie the score nine minutes later with a goal from Jessica Workman .
South Carolina scored just six minutes into the second half to take a 2-1 lead before a McMaster goal would level the scores at 2-2 in the 59th minute. Greene scored again for South Carolina in the 86th minute to give the Gamecocks a 3-2 lead.LaBelle’s goal nine seconds later sent the goal to overtime.
South Carolina held a 21-10 edge in shots, though Kentucky claimed a 17-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Kentucky returns home this weekend to play host to Butler and Evansville in a pair of non-conference matches. The Butler match is set for 7 p.m. Friday at the UK Soccer Complex, while the Evansville match is scheduled to kick-off at noon, Sunday.
