The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team defeated Auburn forthe second time this season, rolling over the Tigers 53-48.

The Wildcats, who defeated Auburn earlier this season 68-67, snapped afive-game losing streak with Wednesday’s win that began on Jan. 18, whenNo. 1 Tennessee defeated the Wildcats 93-65.

UK led 30-16 at the half and held a 17-point lead before the Tigers clawedtheir way back late in the second half.

With 3:14 remaining on the clock a Tiffany Krantz jumper tied the game at45-45. After a made foul shot by Auburn’s Conswella Sparrow and anotherKrantz jumper, the Tigers (14-7, 3-7) took the lead 48-45 with 1:40remaining in the game.

However, Kentucky’s Jaye Barnes countered with two of her game-high 12points to cut the lead to one point, 48-47. Auburn then fouled UK’s KimDenkins on a Tiger missed shot and Denkins netted both free throws for a49-48 lead with 45 seconds left in the game.

Auburn attempted a shot with 16 seconds to take the lead but to no avail.Tiffany Wait, who also posted 12 points in the Wildcat victory, reboundedthe missed shot and was fouled by Krantz. Wait hit both free throws to sealthe win and connected on 9-of-11 free throws for the night, seven of whichcame in the second half.

The Wildcats return home on Sunday, Feb. 8 when they play host to SouthCarolina at 2 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
