Four Wildcats score in double figures.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (December 28, 1998) — The University of Kentucky women’s basketball teamrecorded its tenth win of the season, defeating Cincinnati, 70-59, inMemorial Coliseum. Kentucky had not met Cincinnati since Jan. 17, 1995.

Four Wildcats scored in double figures with Laura Meadows leading theway with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds. Tiffany Wait dropped in16 points while Shantia Owens and Jaye Barnes added 10 and 12 pointsrespectively.

The Cats (10-2, 1-0) led by only one at the half (31-30), but quickly jumpedout to a 41-35 lead on a Wait three-pointer with 14:08 remaining. Wait, whowas 0-of-7 in the first half, nailed five field goals in the second half and hitfive-of-five free throws to give Kentucky the edge.

The Bearcats (7-4, 0-1) rallied back, however, to tie the game at 42-42 with10 minutes remaining in the game. Fourth-year Coach Bernadette Mattoxcontinued to use a full-court press to force 20 UC turnovers and pull awaywith a 66-57 lead with one minute left.

“We pressed for 37 minutes tonight and I felt Tiffany and Laura reallyperformed tonight,” Coach Mattox said. “We know our players will continueto get better and we as a coaching staff will continue to demand excellence atall levels of the game.”

Leading scorer for the Bearcats was Madinah Slaise with 18 points. Alsoadding double digits was Doris Scott with 14 points and Candice Robersonwith 12.

UK moves to 16-3 overall versus Cincinnati and are 11-0 at home versusthe Bearcats. UK’s 10-2 record is the best since 1990 when the Cats beganthe season at 10-1.

The Cats will play host to No. 20 Florida on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 1 p.m. inMemorial Coliseum. The game will be televised live on Florida’s SunshineNetwork.
