The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team (2-4) defeated OhioState (1-4) on Tuesday 68-51, in its first home game of the season. TheWildcats out rebounded the Buckeyes 40-24 and charted 21 second chancepoints. UK scored 17 points off OSU’s 31 turnovers, connecting on 44.4percent of its shots from the floor. The last time UK defeated OSU was onNov. 28, 1990, 107-63.

“Our focal point was not giving up second shots,” coach Bernadette Mattoxsaid. “We still have things we have to work on, but I am proud of the waythey played tonight.”

Three Kentucky players netted double figures as junior forward Jaye Barnesled the charge with 18 points. Senior center Kim Denkins posted the firstdouble-double of the season with 11 points and a season high 14 rebounds.For the fourth time this season freshman guard Laura Meadows scored indouble figures with 13 points.

Marrita Porter and Mindy Fusetti both scored 11 points in OSU’s effort andfreshman Jamie Lewis dished out eight assists. Up by only three at the half(30-37), the Wildcats came out on fire in the second half, hitting 11 of 19shots from the floor. They limited the Buckeyes to only 9 of 29 shots in thesecond half. “We have to play good defense like we did tonight to win,”Meadows said. “We really had our press working and it disrupted them.”Kentucky will be in action again on Saturday, Dec. 6 versus Dayton at 7p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
