The Kentucky Wildcats stood up for something they believed inSaturday. Stunned and saddened by the announcement of theimpending departure of head coach Bill Curry, the Wildcats useda solid defensive effort and the play of freshman running backDerick Logan to win its first Southeastern Conference game ofthe year, 24-17 over Georgia in Commonwealth Stadium.
The Wildcats got on the board first on a Logan 4-yard run in thefirst quarter, and stretched the advantage to 10-0 on a 49 yardfield goal by Brian Johnson.
A Robert Edwards 1-yard TD and a Hap Hines field goal knottedthe game at 10-10 by halftime.
Kentuckys running game took over in the third quarter asquarterback Billy Jack Haskins and Logan both ran for TDs.
Edwards second touchdown of the game — in the fourth quarter –drew the Bulldogs within seven, but the Kentucky defense stoppeda late Bulldogs drive with an interception, sealing the game.
Logan ran for 140 yards and the UK defense held Edwards, who wasaveraging nearly 90 yards per game, to 33 yards on 16 carrieswhile picking off Georgia quarterback Mike Bobo three times.
Kentucky improves to 2-6 overall, 1-4 in the SEC. Georgia fallsto 3-4, 2-3 in the conference.
Kentucky is off next week. The Wildcats host Mississippi Stateon November 9.
