Kentucky freshman quarterback Tim Couch received his firstcollegiate start, but the top-ranked Florida Gators overwhelmedthe Wildcats, 65-0.
Kentucky won the opening coin toss, but elected to kickoff toFlorida. It took the Gators just three plays and 63 seconds totake the lead. Danny Wuerffel hit Ike Hilliard with a 34-yardtouchdown pass to put Florida ahead 7-0.
Bart Edmiston nailed a 39-yard field goal before Wuerffel hitReidel Anthony with a 14 yard TD strike with four minutes leftin the first quarter to put the Gators up 17-0. Another Edmistonfield goal made the score 20-0 after 15 minutes of play.
The Kentucky offense, ranked 110 out of 111 Division I-Afootball teams entering the game, experienced no success in theSwamp. The Wildcats managed just five first downs and 52 yardsof offense on 43 plays. Couch was 6-of-18 for 13 yards and oneinterception.
Up 41-0 at the break, Floridas lead kept growing. Jacquez Greenreturned consecutive Jimmy Carter punts for touchdowns early inthe third quarter. The returns were for 66-yards and 79-yards,respectively.
Wuerffel completed 21-of-31 passes for 279 yards and threetouchdowns. The Gators improved to 4-0, while UK dropped to 1-3.Next week, the Wildcats travel to Alabama for a contest with theCrimson Tide.
