Women’s basketball travels to Alabama.
LEXINGTON, Kty. (Jan. 26, 2000) — The University of Kentuckywomen’s basketball team travels to Tuscaloosa,Ala., on Thursday, Jan. 27 to take on Alabama at 8p.m. ET in Coleman Coliseum. The game will betelevised live on Fox Sports Net South with VanChancellor and Ron Thulin. FSNS is not availablein Lexington.
The Wildcats (11-7, 3-3) went 1-2 in three straighthome games last week, defeating Arkansas andfalling to nationally-ranked LSU (No. 14) andTennessee (No. 2). Despite trailing by as many as20 points versus the Lady Vols on Sunday, theCats clawed back within two points with :12seconds remaining. Sophomore LaTonya McDoleled the Cats with 18 points while senior EricaJackson led the comeback charge with all 11 of herpoints coming in the second half.
Like Kentucky, Alabama has charted just one winin its last four games. The Tide (11-6, 1-3) fell toMississippi State on Sunday at home (85-65), afterpulling out a two-point win over Ole Miss for itsfirst SEC victory.
“In this conference every team is competitive andyou have to be ready to play,” UK CoachBernadette Mattox said. “Alabama is a very goodteam and they are well coached. They’ve brought innew personnel this season after returning only twostarters. Like us, they will be looking at this game togain some confidence heading into February.”
Kentucky returns all five starters from last year’ssquad that upset nationally-ranked Alabama inLexington. The win marked UK’s first win overBama in six years. The trip to Tuscaloosa might prove to be a bit tougher asKentucky hasn’t won in Coleman Coliseum in 10 years. The last time UKdefeated Bama on the road was Feb. 17, 1990.
“It’s always tough playing on the road,” Mattox said. “We have to stayfocused on our game and take care of the little things. The rest will fall intoplace.”
Kentucky is 1-1 on the road against SEC teams this season. The Catsdefeated Florida 72-58 on Jan. 10 and lost in overtime to Vanderbilt 60-55just three days later.
