Women’s hoops look to get back to winning ways against the Gamecocks.
(Feb. 19, 2000) — After a heart-breaking loss to nationally-rankedGeorgia on Thursday, the University of Kentuckywomen’s basketball team looks to bounce back intoa winning streak when it takes on South Carolina onSunday, Feb. 20 in Columbia, S.C. Game time isslated at 2 p.m. at the Frank McGuire Arena andwill be broadcast on WLXG-AM Sports Radio1300.
The Wildcats (12-11, 4-7 SoutheasternConference) took No.2/3 Georgia down to thewire in Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, falling73-69 after Erica Jackson was forced out ofbounds with 25 seconds remaining in the game.Jackson led four Cats in double figures, scoring 19points. South Carolina (11-3, 2-10 SEC) had aheartbreaker of its own, falling to Alabama 69-67 inTuscaloosa, Ala.
“South Carolina is a much improved team,” UKCoach Bernadette Mattox said. “Their record is noindication of their play. They have a big-time playerin Annie Lester and we must contain her on Sundayand crash the boards in order come out with a win.”
Lester, a 6-0 senior, dropped 32 points on the Catslast Sunday and accomplished that feat again onThursday versus the Tide. Lester leads the LadyGamecocks in scoring (12.7) and is second on theteam in rebounding (5.2).
Last Sunday versus South Carolina, the Cats pulledout a 73-71 victory, after Jocelyn Penn’s lastsecond 10-footer rimmed out. UK held a 16-pointlead in the first half before allowing South Carolinato pull within 71-70 with 1:46 remaining. FourWildcats scored in double figures as sophomore forward LaTonya McDoleled with 16. Laura Meadows followed with 15 while Jackson and TiffanyWait scored 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The Cats lead the all-time series 16-7 against South Carolina and are 9-2versus the Lady Gamecocks in Lexington. However, South Carolina holds a5-4 advantage over the Cats when playing in Columbia. Last season inColumbia, Jackson nailed a 25-foot Hail Mary at the buzzer to defeat USC,78-76, marking Kentucky’s first win in the Frank McGuire arena in threetries.
