Four Wildcats tally double figures in 83-75 exhibition win.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 10, 1999) — The University of Kentuckywomen’s basketball team defeated EOS MalbasSweden 83-75 in its first exhibition game of theseason in Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday.

Four Wildcats scored in double figures assophomore forward LaTonya McDole led allscorers with 20. Seniors Erica Jackson and ShantiaOwens netted 16 and 15 points, respectively, andjunior forward Laura Meadows rounded out thescoring with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Defensively the Cats struggled early in the gamewatching a 22-point lead dwindle to only five at thehalf (43-38). Coach Bernadette Mattox hopes theCats can take their first game and use it as alearning experience.

“You can’t go into any game without playing theabsolute best defense you can play,” Mattox said.”But tonight that was a lesson we learned and that’swhy we have exhibition games.”

UK outrebounded Sweden 44-35, including a22-10 advantage on the offensive boards.

“We hit the boards, but we could have had more. Ifelt we didn’t block out enough and we were justwaiting on the ball to come down instead of goingto get it. We have to do a better job of that,”Mattox said.

Leading the Sweden team was former OregonState standout Annette Mollerstrom. She scored 19points while Josefin Fernebro added 17. TheSwedes fall to 0-4 in its eight-game tour of the United States.

UK will play host to its second exhibition game on Saturday night, Nov. 13,in Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m. against Premier Players Select. Admission isfree.
