Durham, N.C. – Senior Matt Kavanagh earned his fourth career All-Americahonor with an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw Thursday at the 2000NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Kavanagh completed his career at the University of Kentucky by throwing214-02.00, his third-longest toss of the season. By finishing fourth amongAmerican competitors, he was named an All-American outdoors for the thirdconsecutive year. His performance at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championshipsset the UK hammer record at 221-4.00, a distance that qualified him for theU.S. Olympic Trials. Kavanagh also was named All-American in the 35-poundweight throw at the 2000 NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

“We are pleased he made the finals and got his fourth All-America,”assistant coach John Kenneson said. “You can’t get too greedy. Last week inpractice he was throwing lifetime bests. Today was a tremendous effort, butthe throws just weren’t there. He is one of the best athletes to ever stepon this campus.”

Kavanagh will begin training for the Olympic Trials, which will be held inSacramento, Calif., July 14-23.
