Limpert places fourth, Johnson fifth in 800-meter run.
BATON ROUGE, La. (May 15, 2000) — The University of Kentucky track and field squads finished competition Sunday at the 2000 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships.
Leading the way for the Cats were senior Jeff Limpert and freshman Chad Johnson who gave UK nine points by finishing fourth and fifth in the 800-meter run. Limpert’s time of 1:48.93 is his third time this season under 1:49 while Johnson’s time of 1:49.90 was his third under 1:50 and improved on his preliminary heat time by nearly a half second.
Also contributing to the Wildcat effort was senior Beth Burkett who claimed fifth place in the javelin throw for five points. She entered the event ranked fourth in the SEC with a season-best toss of 150-05.00, but she started off slowly with a first-round heave of 129-03.00. However, she overtook third-place with her second throw of 144-07.00 to advance to the finals. Once there, she made a slight adjustment to earn a mark of 145-00.00, but even though she came close to improving even more on her last attempt, it was not quite enough to remain in third.
Senior Roshell Russell also gave the UK women points by taking eighth place in the women’s 400-meter dash in a time of 54.60. Russell returned this season after reshirting in 1999 because of an injury. She was not ranked in the SEC top 10 in the 400 but qualified ninth Saturday to make Sunday’s finals.
Other fine performances came from junior Chris Daniel in the pole vault, freshman Simidele Adeagbo and juniors Shevan Threats and Falana Greenwell in the triple jump, and the women’s 4×100-meter relay team. Daniel hit a seasonal-best height in the pole vault when he cleared 16-02.75 to tie for seventh place. Adeagbo finished just out of the scoring in ninth place with a jump of 40-07.75. Threats came in right behind her in tenth with a leap of 40-05.50, while Greewell claimed 13th at 39-08.50. The 4×100 team of >Russell, Adeagbo, Threats and junior Michelle Williams also finished one place outside the scoring with a ninth-place time of 46.36.
Kentucky’s men and women both finished the meet in 11th place, while Arkansas won the men’s and women’s titles with team scores of 171 and 147.75.
The Cats have one last shot to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships to be held in Durham, N.C., on the campus of Duke University, May 31-June 3, 2000. That opportunity comes May 19-20 when UK will send athletes to the Georgia Tech Invitational last-chance meet.
