BATON ROUGE, La.– The University of Kentucky track and field squads had a good showing on the second day of competition Friday at the 2000 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships.

Senior Matt Kavanagh captured third place in the hammer throw with a toss of 207-01.00 after entering the finals in fourth place with a preliminary-round best of 199-01.00. He struck back in the finals, however, throwing three progressively farther distances to finish third with his final heave. Though his best toss of the day overtook the third-place thrower after the preliminaries, it was not enough to surpass the 212-01.00 garnered by Javier Nieto of LSU, nor the SEC meet-record throw of 242-07.00 by Georgia’s Andras Haklits.

In the preliminaries of the 800-meter run, UK’s stable of talented runners again shined, with two moving on to the finals on Sunday. Senior Jeff Limpert claimed the top qualifying time of the day finishing his heat in a time of 1:48.39. Not only does that qualify him for the SEC finals it also gives him a personal best and improves on his NCAA provisional qualifying time. Coming into this meet, he was ranked 13th in the country but could move up after this weekend’s performances.

Joining Limpert in the 800-meter finals will be freshman Chad Johnson, who ran the seventh fastest time in the preliminaries at 1:50.24. Though they did not qualify, freshmen Skyler Smith and Patton Segraves ran personal-best times of 1:51.98 and 1:53.52.

Sophomore Temitayo Adeagbo claimed 10th place in the women’s heptathlon breaking the school record with an outstanding day two effort in the final three events. After day one, Adeagbo was well off the pace to match her personal best mark of 4,410 points. However, she earned seasonal bests in the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter runs to finish with 4,582 points, eclipsing the school record set in 1991 by 19 points.

Also giving valiant efforts, junior Shevan Threats and senior Roshell Russell established seasonal bests in the 200-meter dash, falling just outside of qualifying for the finals. Threats’ time of 23.71, the 10th fastest of the day, also gave her a personal best, while Russell finished the day with the 13th fastest time at 23.83. Falling short of the finals was freshman Marie Patton in the 800-meter run, however, her time of 2:14.19 was a personal best.

Competition continues Saturday, May 13, with the women’s long jump at 5 p.m. CST.
