LEXINGTON, Ky. – Trey Dyson homered for the fifth game in a row, Tripp Kelly hit a grand slam, and Nate Janowicz had a school record six singles on Sunday as No. 1 ranked South Carolina crushed Kentucky 18-6 to sweep the three-game Southeastern Conference series and stretch the Gamecock win streak to 16 games.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 29-13-1 and 7-12-1 in SEC play. South Carolina, which opened the season with a 22-game win streak, improved its record to 41-4 and its Southeastern Conference leading mark to 18-3.Peter Bauer scattered eight hits over the first seven innings, allowing three runs, to raise his season record to 8-0. Scott Wade, 7-4, the first of five Kentucky hurlers on the afternoon, was the losing pitcher.
South Carolina used two big innings to break the game open, scoring six times in the third and nine in the seventh. The Gamecocks scored single runs in the fourth, eighth and ninth. They collected a season high 19 hits to amass 50 hits in the three game series. The Gamecocks scored 44 runs and hit 12 home runs in the three games, winning 15-5 and 11-10 in the first two games.
Dyson hit a two run homer in the six run third inning and Kelly homered with the bases loaded in the nine run seventh. It was his second grand slam of the year and his 15th home run. Dyson’s homer was his eighth but his fifth in five games over the past week.
Janowicz had six singles, tying the school record for most hits in a game and establishing a new record for one base hits. The previous record was five. Everyone in the South Carolina starting lineup had at least one hit.
The Wildcats scored all of six of their runs in the final four innings. UK collected 11 hits, including Beau Moore’s fourth homer which came in the seventh inning. Andy Green, Aaron McGlone and Robert Newton had two hits for Kentucky. Despite reaching double-figures in hits for the third time of the weekend and receiving seven bases on balls, the Cats fell short again against USC by tying a seaon-high with 14 runners left on base. UK stranded 35 runners in the three-game series.
The Cats return to action on Tuesday, April 25 when they travel to face state-rival Louisville. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. EDT start at Cardinal Stadium. UK beat the Cards earlier this season, 10-3 on April 12 at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
