Robinson Sustains Arm Fracture: University of Kentucky widereceiver Jimmy Robinson re-fractured his left humerus (upper arm bone)during Saturday’s scrimmage and will miss the remainder of springpractice.

Dr. Darren Johnson, who attended to the injury on Saturday, willre-examine Robinson on Monday and begin discussing a plan of treatment.The injury is in the same location as the fracture Robinson sustainedlast summer.

The extent to which the current injury will affect his playingstatus for the 2000 season is uncertain at this time. The NCAA hasgranted Robinson an extra year to complete his eligibility because ofinjuries that caused him to miss the 1995 and 1999 seasons.

Whalen also is writing a draft diary for the CNN/SI websiteduring the weeks leading up to the NFL Draft, which is April 15. Thediary is targeted for publishing on Wednesdays. Look for Whalen’s diaryunder the pro football section at the cnnsi.com internet site.

From 1997-99, Whalen went from unknown walk-on to first-teamAll-America. He caught 90 passes for 1,019 yards and 10 touchdowns as asenior, leading the nation’s tight ends in all three categories. He setNCAA records for most receptions in a season by a tight end and mostreceptions per game (8.2) by a tight end. His 90 catches also brokeUK’s single-season record for receptions, eclipsing Craig Yeast’s markof 85 set in 1998.


Grayson Smith Advanced to Semifinals of National BoxingChampionships:
UK defensive lineman Grayson Smith reached the semifinalsof the National Collegiate Boxing Association championships last week atthe Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Smith advanced to the semis after defeating Jamal Cherry ofCalifornia, 5-0, Thursday night in the quarterfinal round. Smith’stournament run ended when he was defeated Friday night. The 6-1,245-pound Smith fought in the heavyweight division, which is for boxerswho weigh at least 201 pounds.

Smith was part of the five-man UK team that vied for theNational Collegiate Boxing Association title. The Wildcat boxers wonthe Midwest Region crown on March 24-25 by defeating Navy, the firsttime that the Wildcats had defeated the Midshipmen.

Smith will be a senior on the UK football team this fall. Hehas been a dependable reserve at defensive end, totaling 21 tackles, twotackles for loss (-4) and two quarterback sacks (-8) over the past twoseasons. He is working at defensive tackle this spring in order toimprove the team’s depth at that position. Coach Hal Mumme excusedSmith from practice on Friday and Saturday in order to compete at thechampionships.
