LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team finished in eighth place with a team score of 901 in the 14th Annual Johnny Owens Invitational tournament at Kearney Hill Links.
Senior Ron Layman and junior Pat Kelly, who finished in a tie for 14th with scores of 7-over-par 223, led the Cats. Junior Wes Furnish and sophomore John Beckett each finished with a 13-over-par 229, while freshman Andy Dustman finished with a 16-over-par 232.
Members of the UK golf team competing as individuals included junior Ryan Wilson with a 9-over-par 225, sophomore Philip Schardein with a 10-over-par 226, sophomore Ryan Coyne with a 13-over-par 229, senior Ryan Rieckhoff with a 16-over-par 232 and sophomore Brad Pogue with a 26-over-par 242.
“I congratulate the teams that played well in the tournament,” Coach Steve Smitha said. “When you host a tournament on a course you’re familiar with, you are supposed to play the course the way it was intended to be played. If you don’t, you’re home course advantage goes out the window. We have to go back and regroup–all of us, including myself. It’s important to work harder going into conference play.”
Louisville came on strong to win the event in the final round. The Cardinals were led by Chris Campbell, who shot a 5-under-par 67 in the final round en route to a three-round 2-under-par 214 for a second place finish overall. Marshall’s Sam O’Dell held strong in the final round to capture individual honors with his total 5-under-par 211.
The Cats are back in action April 7-8 when they compete in the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va.
