FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The UK women’s tennis team got its second win in arow on Sunday by defeating the 22nd-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, 5-4. TheCats notched their first Southeastern Conference victory of the season andupped their record to 7-5.
Getting key individual wins from Brooke Skeen, Jill Buckley and LaurenRookledge, the Cats and Hogs were knotted at 3-3 after singles competition.UK rose to the challenge by taking two of the three doubles matches enroute to the victory.
The nation’s 26th-ranked doubles team of Skeen and Leigh Bradwell defeated35th-ranked Tara Reid and Brenda Vlaska to give UK its first doublesvictory of the match. The recently assembled team of Rookledge and Buckleyclinched the win for the Cats with a clutch 8-1 victory at the No. 3doubles spot. This duo of Rookledge and Buckley has gone 5-1 this seasonand also has key wins in matches against Purdue, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
“After the Ohio State match we had a lengthy team meeting. We felt that weneeded to show more enthusiasm and be more supportive towards ourteammates. Today we did that,” coach Mark Guilbeau said. “This is the bestmatch we have played all season, singles and doubles. We fought very hardto win in singles and we fought hard to keep the singles matches we didn’twin very close. There was just a great sense of spirit and a great teamenvironment today.”
The Cats continue to play on the road when they travel to Auburn, Ala. tobattle the Tigers on Friday, March 17, at 4 p.m.
