LEXINGTON, Kty. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team dropped itssecond dual match in a row on Tuesday to 16th-ranked Vanderbilt, 7-2.
The Commodores (12-1), boasting five nationally ranked players, won five ofsix singles matches over the Cats. Junior Brooke Skeen, UK’s loneupperclassman and the nation’s 55th-ranked player, continued heroutstanding play by topping 63rd-ranked Sarah Riske in a three-set matchthat lasted over three hours. UK’s top doubles team, 27th-ranked CarolinaMayorga and Sarah Witten, grabbed the only other win for the Cats byupsetting 12th-ranked Kristy Blumberg and Kate Burson.
“Vanderbilt is legitimately one of the top ten teams in the nation. Wedon’t like to lose, but we really have a good feeling,” coach Mark Guilbeausaid. “This team is realistic and mature enough to know that this is a stepin the right direction. We played very well and have the perspective to seethat playing this well will eventually lead to wins. This team has a lot ofcharacter and toughness. They always fight hard.”
The Cats will return to the courts Friday, March 10, when they play host tothe Ohio State Buckeyes. Action will begin at 3 p.m. ET at the Hilary J.Boone Tennis Complex on the UK campus. Admission is free.
