LEXINGTON, Kty. — The University of Kentucky baseball team has seen its presence on the national scene increased this week as the Wildcats have moved up to No. 21 in both the USA Today Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches’ top 25 poll and the Collegiate Baseball top 30 poll.
The Wildcats made their initial appearance of 2000 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN poll last week at No. 24 before jumping up three spots this week. This is the Cats’ first time on the Collegiate Baseball poll this season.
At 10-0 on the young season, the Cats are one of only six undefeated teams on the Collegiate Baseball poll.
Kentucky’s 10-win streak to start this season is the best season-opening streak in UK baseball history. The best previous start to a season under coach Keith Madison came in 1987 when the Cats won their first eight games. The Cats have previously won 10 straight under Madison twice, in 1990 and again in ’96, but never at the start of a season. The current coach also holds the longest overall winning streak in UK history as Madison’s bunch won 13 straight in 1992.
