LEXINGTON, Kty. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team droppedonly its second dual match of the season on Saturday, falling 6-3 to the17th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Cats won only one singles match. That victory belonged to juniorBrooke Skeen, who continued her stellar play by upsetting the nation’s53rd-ranked player Jennifer Radman. Skeen has now been victorious overthree straight ranked opponents.
The Cats grabbed two more wins in the doubles competition. UK’s top doublesteam, 13th-ranked Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten, defeated 31st-rankedKatrina Markovski and Jennifer Radman. Also notching a doubles win for theCats was the team of Amy Tefethen and Lauren Rookledge.
“We are a very young team, but we are not going to let that be an excuse.We have to learn to play with composure and concentration,” Coach MarkGuilbeau said. “We are not going to dwell on this loss. We are just excitedabout getting back in here tomorrow and matching up against another verygood team in Ole Miss. I am impressed by the commitment of this team, theyalways seem to regroup and stay positive.”
The Cats will return to the courts tomorrow, when they will play host tothe Lady Rebels of Ole Miss. Action will begin at noon in the Hilary J.Boone Indoor Tennis Center on the UK campus.
