AUBURN, Ala. – The UK men’s swimming and diving team set three new team recordsled by junior Shaun Zitani, who set a new school record in the 50-yardfreestyle, leading off the 200 freestyle relay Wednesday night at theSoutheastern Conference Championships. Zitani’s time of 19.75 broke his oldrecord of 19.97 set in 1999.

The UK men’s 200 freestyle relay (Aaron Workman, Macon White, David Tweedie,Zitani) met the NCAA “B” cut and broke the school record, finishing fourth witha time of 1:20.12, breaking the existing school mark of 1:21.01.

The men’s 200 medley relay (Brett Palmer, Josh Waldrop, Zitani, Workman) brokethe UK school record, finishing fifth with a time of 1:30.79. The old mark of1:31.14 was set as the 1999 SEC Championships.

Freshman diver Clayton Moss placed third on the 3-meter diving event with ascore of 581.80. Moss’ score met the NCAA Zone cut of 480.

The UK women’s 200 freestyle relay (Annabel Kosten, Jaime Siegele, JennyPriester, Lisa Beavers) finished fourth with a time of 1:33.48. The relay teammet the NCAA “B” cut exactly, 1:33.48.

In the women’s 200 medley relay (Taryn Kannegeisser, Jen Clifford, CarolynRader, Siegele), the Cats scored a sixth place finish with a time of 1:44.95.After the first night of competition, the UK men stand in a tie with SouthCarolina for third place with 76 points. The UK women’s squad is fifth overallwith 76 points.

“The highlights tonight were basically on the men’s side with three new teamrecords,” UK coach Gary Conelly said. “The women were solid but the men wereoutstanding. Zitani’s NCAA automatic cut was huge because it is the first “A”cut for us in three years. This is the best start on the men’s side since Ihave been at UK.”

Preliminaries on Thursday morning will begin at 11:30 a.m. (EST), while finalsare set for 7:30 p.m. The times are the same for Friday and Saturday prelimsand finals.
