LEXINGTON, Ky. – The UK women’s tennis team lost its first dual match ofthe season to second-ranked Florida on Friday, 8-1, falling short of itsbid to upset the highly-ranked Gators.
The Wildcats (2-1) gave Florida (3-0) an early scare. Brooke Skeen, theCats’ lone upperclassman, beat the eleventh-ranked player in the nation,Baili Camino, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. After losing the first set, Skeen battled backto take the next two and down Camino.
Carolina Mayorga also had an impressive showing in a near victory. Mayorgalost to No. 1-seeded Whitney Laiho in a third set tie-breaker.
“The final score is not really representative of the way we played,” CoachMark Guilbeau said.
“Florida has a lot of highly-ranked players. They are agreat team. I feel that tonight we showed that we are also a very goodteam. I am extremely pleased with their effort. They play great, smarttennis and keep their composure. Most of all, they do the things that wetalk about in practice. They play with pride and they have fun.”
The Cats look to get back on the winning track Saturday when they face the27th-ranked North Carolina Tarheels at the Hilary J. Boone Indoor TennisComplex on the UK campus.
