LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team looks to snapa 16-game losing streak to No. 2 Tennessee on Sunday at 2 p.m. inMemorial Coliseum when the teams meet for the 38th time in schoolhistory. The game will be televised live on Comcast Sports Southeast,but will not be available in Lexington. Check local listings foravailability.
The last time UK defeated the Lady Vols was on Jan. 24, 1986 inLexington (86-82). UT holds a 32-5 record against UK and is 15-3 whenplaying in Memorial Coliseum. The Lady Vols enter Sunday’s game after a78-51 loss at No. 7 Georgia on Monday. UT is 13-3 overall and 3-1 inthe Southeastern Conference. The Lady Vols are currently tied forsecond place in the SEC with Georgia while Kentucky battles withMississippi State for third place.
“Knowing Coach Summitt, her team will come in here ready to playon Sunday,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “We have to come out withmore intensity than we did against LSU and we have to keep them off theboards. They are a strong team and a good shooting team. We need allfive of our starters to contribute, not just one or two.”
Kentucky boasts three Wildcats averaging in double figures.Leading the pack is junior Laura Meadows and sophomore LaTonya McDolewho average 12.3 and 12.1 points per game, respectively. Senior EricaJackson follows with 11.1 ppg while senior Shantia Owens chartsmarginally misses the double figure mark with 9.9 ppg.
Four Volunteers average in double digits this season. SophomoreTamika Catchings leads the way with 15.2 points per game while freshmanKara Lawson averages 14.2 ppg. Not far behind in the scoring column isjunior Semeka Randall who averages 14.1 ppg. Sophomore center MichelleSnow also averages double digits with 12.9 ppg.
Tickets are still available and will go on sale beginning atnoon. Prices are $5 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens.Memorial Coliseum doors will open at 12:30 p.m.
