LEXINGTON, KTY — The UK men?s and women?s swimming and diving teams scored two excitingvictories over the visiting LSU Tigers Friday afternoon at the LancasterAquatic Center.
On the men?s side, the Cats had to win the 200-yard freestylerelay, thefinal event of the meet, in order to win the dual meet. The relay team of ShaunZitani, David Tweedie, Macon White and Aaron Workman held off a charging LSUrelay squad, edging the Tigers by a final score of 122-121. The win was theCats? (3-2) first victory over LSU in a dual meet in school history.
Zitani claimed two individual events for UK, the 50 and 100 freestyles.Zitani, who has not lost a 50 freestyle race this season, swam his best time ofthe year, 20.34.
Other event winners for the UK men include Eddie Clement (200 I.M.),Macon White (200 freestyle), David Tweedie (1,000 freestyle), and diver ClaytonMoss (3-meter).
The UK women?s team scored a 124-118 win over the Tigers by finishingfirst and second in the 200 freestyle relay to end the meet.
UK?s Kelley Miller out-touched LSU?s Johanna Hill by less thanthree-tenths of a second, keeping the Cats? (6-0) undefeated in dual meets thisseason.
Junior standout Melissa Olson won the 1,000 freestyle and the 200 I.M.and finished second in the 100 backstroke for UK.
Senior Annabel Kosten claimed the 50 and 100 freestyles and sophomoreCarolyn Rader won the 500 freestyle.
“Both the men and women?s meet tonight were very exciting and it was good tosee the kids really step up to the challenge,” UK coach Gary Conelly said.
“With the Southeastern Conference Championships just around the corner, we needto build as much momentum going into the meet as possible.”UK returns to the water at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, when the Cats play hostto Cincinnati at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.
