LEXINGTON, Kty. –Senior Matt Kavanagh provisionally qualified in the 35-pound weight throw for the third time in as many meets at the SEC Quad at Nutter Fieldhouse on Friday, Jan. 21. Junior Shevan Threats won the women?s long jump with her season best jump of 19-06.75.
Kavanagh won the weight throw event with a heave of 65-01.25, more than 13 feet more than the next closest competitor, Lance Jauron of Tennessee. Kavanagh?s win earned Kentucky?s men?s team nine points in the SEC Quad, which also featured Mississippi State and Alabama, in addition to Kentucky and Tennessee.
Threats’ winning jump was more than two inches longer than her previous season best of 19-4.25. The win is Threat?s third in as many meets.
Also contributing points to Kentucky was junior Rebecca Wedel, who finished fourth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 49-08.25.
The women?s team standings after two events have Alabama in the lead with 19 points. Mississippi State, Kentucky and Tennessee are all tied for second with 18 points. In the men?s standings, after three events, Tennessee leads with 42 points. Mississippi State is in second with 27.50 points, Alabama is third with 17.50 points and Kentucky is in a close fourth with 17 points.
The competition will continue Saturday morning at Nutter Fieldhouse with the remaining field events beginning at 11:30 a.m., and the running events beginning at 1 p.m.
