LEXINGTON, Kty. — The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team has signedtwo players to national letters of intent, Coach Bernadette Mattoxannounced today.
Se Se Helm is ranked as the 14th best high school player in thenation by Street & Smith’s magazine. The 6-4 center at Warren CentralHigh School in Bowling Green is a candidate for Kentucky’s MissBasketball crown after compiling over 2,266 career points, 1,076rebounds, 236 blocks and shooting 63.8 percent from field goal rangethrough her junior season.
Helm was listed as a preseason All-American by the USA Today andwas ranked 12th by the Women’s Basketball Journal for the Class of 2000.She was named to the Courier-Journal and Lexington Herald-LeaderAll-State first team in 1998 and 1999. For the past three seasons, shewas named Player of the Year by the 4th Region Coaches Association.
“The Kentucky system is designed for a player like Se Se. She isone of the top post players in the country,” Coach Mattox said. “She isvery unique. You just don’t get a player like Se Se every year. At6-4, Se Se is the most versatile post player that we’ve had in thissystem. With her size and frame she can do so many things around theblock.”
Helm was recruited by such national powers as Tennessee, Georgiaand North Carolina.
Also signing was Tulsa, Okla., prep star Stephanie Stoglin. The6-0 guard from Booker T. Washington High School averaged 15 points agame last year and is considered the No. 2 player in Oklahoma and one ofthe top 50 in the country. She was named team Most Valuable Player thepast two seasons and was the conference Player of the Year as asophomore. Stoglin was named to the Tulsa World All-Metro team twiceand the All-City/All-Conference teams three times. She was named TCICable’s Female Player of the Year in 1998-99.
“Stephanie is a true coach’s daughter,” Mattox said. “She hasbeen around the game for so long that she understands the game and knowshow to play it. She will bring two dimensions to Kentucky, the abilityto go inside our outside. She can be a great post player and an awesomeoutside shooter.”
Stoglin is the daughter of Jackson State coach Andy Stoglin.
