LEXINGTON, Ky. – In the University of Kentucky’s first and only public intrasquad men’sbasketball scrimmage of season, Jamaal Magloire tallied 33 points and SaulSmith added 16 points and nine assists as the annual Blue-White Game endedin a 78-78 overtime tie before a crowd of 3,950 at Memorial Coliseum.
With just 11 players, the two squads were interchanged throughout thecontest. The White team, which began the game with the Wildcats’ probablestarting lineup — guards Desmond Allison and Smith, forwards Jules Camaraand Tayshaun Prince with Magloire in the middle. The starters led the Whiteto a 42-26 halftime lead thanks to Magloire’s 18 first-half points.
“His game is going to the basket hard,” Camara said. “He has improvedthat part of his game from last year and he showed that tonight.”
Magloire hit 14-of-20 shots from the floor for a sterling 70-percent effort.
“Jamaal is getting more and more patient on the court,” said Coach TubbySmith, who was pleased with his team’s effort. “He is posting up andworking hard on his skills. His positive attitude and leadership areshowing. He’s doing an excellent job and is very focused.”
“I feel like I did okay,” Magloire said. “The team is looking better,better than we normally do at this time of the year. We are going tocontinue to work hard.
“I am just here to help the team as much as I can. Scoring, rebounding,shot blocking – I will do whatever the coach asks of me.”
Saul Smith was two of five from three-point range and committed just twoturnovers in 41 minutes of action. Prince finished with 28 points afterscoring only nine in the opening 20 minutes. He also chipped in eightrebounds while freshman guard Keith Bogans added 18 points and nine boards.Prince and Bogans shot a combined six of 11 from behind the three-point arc.
With the Blue team leading 75-73 with less than six seconds remaining inregulation, Coach Smith called a timeout to set up the final play. Thefinal shot ended with a running jumper by Todd Tackett that missed, but therebound was converted by Camara to send the game into overtime.
In the three-minute overtime period, both teams scored three points apieceand the game ended in a tie.
The teams combined to shoot 14-of-35 from three-point range. But it wasthe overall effort that pleased the head coach.
“I was pleased with the effort and intensity,” Coach Smith said. “The guyshave been playing against each other for a while now and they are itchingto play others. I was pleased with Jamaal, Saul and Tayshaun. Everybodystood out at some point during the game.”
The Cats open exhibition play at Rupp Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 2, againstthe California All-Stars at 7:30 p.m.
