LEXINGTON, Kty. – The 19th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team defeated thevisiting Mississippi State Bulldogs 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the UK SoccerComplex to extend its win streak to 11 games.
After both teams played a scoreless first half, UK (12-2-1, 6-1 SEC) goton the board under four minutes into the second half.
Sophomore forward Annie Gage fired a 16-yard shot past MSU goalkeeperStephanie Lyon and into the left corner. Gage’s eleventh goal of the seasonwas also her fifth game-winning goal this season. Elizabeth Ramsey andEmily Oetjen were each credited with an assist on the play.
With less than one minute remaining in the match, UK’s Suzie Ledzianowskinetted her first goal of the season. The Mentor, Ohio, native lofted a25-yard shot high over Lyon’s head and into the back of the net.
While the Cats outshot MSU 25-4, the Bulldogs (3-14-0, 1-6) did not recorda shot in the second half. UK goalkeeper Beth Wells posted her fifthshutout of the season while Lyon recorded 10 saves for the Bulldogs.
“We did not adjust well to the speed of the game,” UK coach Warren Lipkasaid. “They play at a much slower tempo than us and most of the teams we’veplayed this season. The important thing is we went out and got the win andthat’s what counts.”
UK returns to action on Friday, Oct. 22, when the Cats travel to face theArkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Ark. The match begins at 7:00 p.m.
