LEXINGTON, Kty. – Dougie Allen Wins National Award: Sophomore wide receiver DougieAllen has won an award for the Compaq College Plays of the Week underthe category of “Best Reception.”
Allen won for his 24-yard touchdown catch in last Saturday’s31-20 upset of top 20-ranked Arkansas. On the play, Allen beat doublecoverage and made a remarkable diving catch, even though the defense wascalled for pass interference.
Ironically, it was on that play that Allen sustained a tornposterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He will be unable toplay for the remainder of the season. Allen will have reconstructive surgery in 2-3 weeks. If all goes well,he will be able to run by the spring and participate in the non-contactportions of spring practice. His playing status for the 2000 seasonwill be decided in August.
Allen is Kentucky’s second-leading receiver during the 1999 season with25 catches for 263 yards and three touchdowns. He leads the SEC andranks eighth nationally in kickoff returns with a 30.8-yard average.
He is the second Wildcat to win a Compaq College Plays of theWeek Award this season. Tight end James Whalen, Jr., won the “BestHustle” Play of the Week for his 57-yard touchdown reception againstLouisville that was capped by a dive into the end zone.
