The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team smashed host Purdue 11-0 onFriday in first-round action at the Purdue Fall Invitational in WestLafayette, Ind.
Leigh Bradwell, Jill Buckley, Carolina Mayorga, Lauren Rookledge, BrookeSkeen, Amy Trefethen and Sarah Witten all picked up singles and doubleswins for UK as the Cats stormed out of the gates to start the 1999 season.
In perhaps the day’s most exciting match, UK freshman Sarah Witten ralliedto claim a 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (17-15) win over Ericka Quebe.
The performance of UK’s squad, comprised of one junior, two sophomores andthree freshmen, thrilled UK Coach Mark Guilbeau.
“This is a great way to start the year,” he said. “What an unbelievablefirst day.”
The Tennis Cats return to action at the Invitational on Saturday, whenthey battle Wisconsin at 9 a.m.
