LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky soccer teams will take the field on Sunday fora doubleheader at the UK Soccer Complex with both teams set to battletop-15 opponents.
The women’s team opens the twin bill at 1 p.m., when is hosts the12th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in an SEC showdown.
The Cats (5-2-1, 2-1 SEC) will put their four-game winning streak on theline against the Bulldogs (7-1-1, 2-1 SEC), who had their seven-matchwinning streak snapped Friday night with a 3-1 loss to host Vanderbilt.
“We have had success against Georgia in the past, but they have reallystepped up their level of play this season,” UK women’s coach Warren Lipkasaid. “It’s important we pressure them early so we can play the type ofgame we like to play.”
UK topped Tennessee 3-0 Friday night and is ranked 28th nationally andfourth in the Great Lakes Region.
Both squads boast tough defenses. UK has not allowed a goal in threematches, and UGA did not allow a goal in its first eight matches this season.UK leads the overall series between the two teams, 3-1, including a 1-0overtime victory last year in Athens, Ga.
The UK men’s team will follow at 3 p.m., when the Cats face No. 15Cincinnati in a regional battle.
The Cats (4-2-0) and Bearcats (5-1-1) are ranked seventh and second in theGreat Lakes Region, respectively, and the match could have post-seasonimplications.
“UC is ranked second in our region,” UK men’s coach Ian Collins said. “Awin would move us up in the polls and help our chances of making the NCAATournament.”
Both squads will look to improve upon Wednesday night outings, as UK fell1-0 to intra-state foe Western Kentucky and UC tied with cross-townadversary Xavier 1-1.
Cincinnati leads the all-time series between the two squads, 4-2, winninglast year’s match 4-0 in the Queen City.
