LEXINGTON, Ky. – It was one day and out for the three members of the University of Kentucky men?s tennis team who were competing in the T. Rowe Price ITA National Clay Court Championships in Baltimore on Thursday. Seniors Carlos Drada and Johan Hesoun both lost in the second round after advancing with wins earlier in the day. Junior Edo Bawano lost a tough first round match and was then eliminated from the consolation round in straight sets.
Things had been looking up for Drada and Hesoun after the morning action on Thursday. Drada, No. 27 in the nation, came from a set down to beat Peter Luczak (Fresno St.) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile, Hesoun, No. 54 in the nation, had a seemingly easy go of it in the first round as he beat Gerard Mulas of SMU in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
After earning the final qualifying position, Bawano , No. 82 in the nation, faced a tough match against the tourney?s No. 1 seed, Ryan Sachire of Notre Dame. Sachire won the first set, 7-5, but Bawano evened the match with a dominant 6-2 win in the second. His success didn?t last though as Sachire took the match with a 6-2 win of his own in the third set. Bawano was then dropped by Doug Root of Duke in the consolation match, 6-2, 6-3.
Both Drada and Hesoun had a difficult time in their second round matches. New Mexico?s Matt Amgwerd topped Drada 6-4, 6-4, while Hesoun was ousted by Francisco Rodriguez of Alabama, the tournament?s No. 2 seed. Hesoun took the second set of the match 7-6, 7-3 in the tiebreaker, but was crushed in the first and third sets, losing 6-2 and 6-1, respectively.
All three men will return to action with their fellow teammates next weekend when the University of Kentucky hosts the Charles Fluitt Collegiate Classic at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington.
