LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky junior varsity football team will showcasevarsity backup quarterbacks Mike Scipione and Mark Perry in its first gameof the season on Monday, Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. versus Maryville College atCommonwealth Stadium.
Due to a limited number of practices, head coach Sonny Dykes will useMonday’s game to see how the team handles game situations.
“We will probably use Scipione (backup to varsity QB Dusty Bonner) in thefirst quarter and then rotate Perry in the second. We think this is agreat opportunity for these guys to get game experience,” Dykes said. “Weare anxious to see if they make the appropriate checks and see how theyperform under pressure.”
Over 70 athletes will participate in the jayvee program, which is compiledmainly of walk-ons and a few scholarship players. This is the largestturnout in its three-year existence.
“They have a great attitude and have worked really hard so far,” Dykessaid. “We are excited to see how they play on Monday.”
The JV squad, which runs the same offensive and defensive schemes as thevarsity, was formed by Coach Hal Mumme in 1997 to give freshmen andwalk-ons the opportunity to perform and showcase their skills in real gamesituations.
“At most Division I universities, freshmen and walk-ons only stand on thesidelines during practice,” Mumme said. “The junior varsity program givesthese guys a chance to show us that they can play at UK.”
