Sept. 9, 1999

University of Kentucky men’s soccer player Michael Stickler has been named to Soccer America’s College Team of the Week for Sept. 1-5, the magazine announced Thursday.

Stickler, a senior striker from Hudson, Ohio, was chosen for his play during UK’s run at the UNLV Rebel Classic, where he scored three goals in two matches, including the game-winner in the tournament’s championship match.

For his efforts, Stickler was named the Classic’s Most Valuable Player, as he helped lead the Cats to a 2-0 record, their best start since 1995.

“We’re really happy that Michael is being honored on a national level,” UK Coach Ian Collins said. “We’ve always known what a great striker Michael is, and now he’s just getting some of the recognition he deserves.”

Soccer America is the most-read soccer publication in the U.S., and also sponsors one of the nation’s most-visited soccer websites at www.socceramerica.com.

Stickler and the Soccer Cats return to the UK Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 12, when UK faces UNC Asheville in the home opener at 2 p.m.
