LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team and Evansville played to a1-1 tie in double overtime Sunday afternoon in the Wildcats’ season openerat the UK Soccer Complex.
Evansville (1-0-1) jumped out to an early lead when forward Niki Watkinswon a 1-on-1 battle with UK keeper Jo Fletcher. With Watkins driving downthe field, Fletcher came out of the box and went to the ground in anattempt to smother ball. Fletcher was unable to make the stop and Watkinssquirted the ball past Fletcher and into the right corner of the net at the19:31 mark.
UK (0-0-1) got on the scoreboard at the 74:03 mark when freshman KeriBoyce took a crossing pass from sophomore Aimee Brown and put the ball inthe net to tie the game at one goal apiece.
The Cats controlled the tempo in the second half and in both overtimeperiods but were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.After taking just one shot in the first half, UK took nine in the secondhalf and in both overtimes.
Defender Emily Oetjen almost gave the Cats their first win of the season,but her shot hit the crossbar and bounced off. Jaime Dellbringge found theball with her head when it bounced off the crossbar but her header missedthe goal and UK came up empty with less than seven minutes to play in thesecond half.
“We dug ourselves a hole early in the match,” UK head coach Warren Lipkasaid. “We fought extremely hard to get back in the match, but we justcouldn’t capitalize on the chances we had.”
UK returns to action on Fri., Sept. 4, when the Cats travel to Xavier toface the Musketeers in Cincinnati at 7 p.m.
