Paducah, Kentucky native Jackie Trail came up short in her bid to reachthesecond round of the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships on Wednesday,falling6-4, 6-3 to qualifier Linda Wild.

The 18-year old Trail had trouble holding serve throughout the match,and the 299th-ranked Wild was able to capitalize on late breaks in each set.

In addition to the 168th-ranked Trail, Wild also had to overcome averypro-Trail crowd at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.

?The fans were obviously behind Jackie,? Wild said. ?But they weren?trude. You can?t count on that everywhere. They were a very cordial crowd.?

Other winners on the women?s side included No. 1 seed Nicole Pratt,whoadvanced despite being pushed to the limit by Surina DeBeer. After splittingthe first two sets, the two battled evenly in the third before Pratt brokeDeBeer?s serve late in the match to claim the 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win.

On the men?s side, Gabriel Trifu, who topped former French Open andWimbledon champion Jonathan Stark on Monday night, did not fare as well onWednesday, falling 7-6, 6-0 to Kevin Kim. Kim advances to round two, where hewill face No. 2 seed Geoff Grant, a 6-1, 6-1 winner over qualifier Doug Flach.

Two other qualifiers continued their main-draw quests on Wednesday, asLouis Vosloo and Paul Kilderry both moved on to the third round. Vosloo toppedMark Nielsen, 6-3, 6-4, and Kilderry bested Michael Tebbutt, 7-5, 6-4, to setup a third round match between the two.

In doubles action, former UK All-American Greg Van Emburgh teamed upwith Doug Flach to oust No. 2 seeds Geoff Grant and TJ Middleton, 3-6, 6-4,6-2. Van Emburgh and Flach advance to face former Cat great Cedric Kauffmannand current Cat Johan Hesoun in Thursday night?s second match.

Action kicks off Thursday at 1 p.m., with women?s second-round action.Men?s No. 1 seed Anthony DePuis will battle in the evening?s feature match,taking on Ben Ellwood at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate.
