LEXINGTON, Ky. – Cedric Kauffmann and Jackie Trail, two players with strong ties to theBluegrass, have committed to play in the 1999 Fifth Third Bank TennisChampionships, Aug. 2-8, at the Boone Tennis Center on the UK campus.

Kauffmann, a 1998 UK graduate, was an All-American at Kentucky and hasbeen called by UK Coach Dennis Emery, “Simply the best player ever atKentucky.” Since turning pro, Kauffmann has steadily climbed the worldrankings and recently won a challenger event in Mexico. Kauffmann has hadprevious success at the Fifth Third event, reaching the quarterfinals in1998 and upsetting the world’s 155th-ranked player, Roberto Jabali, in1997. In addition to singles, Kauffmann will compete in doubles withformer UK great and Wimbledon doubles semifinalist Greg Van Emburgh.

Trail, a native of Paducah who won state high school tennis titles in 1994and 1995, was a crowd favorite at the 1998 Fifth Third Championships andhas jumped to No. 168 in the latest WTA rankings. She has reached thesecond round at the past two U.S. Open Championships and has won numerousjunior tournaments, including the 1997 Nationals and Clay Courts 18s.

The Fifth Third Tournament is the only professional tennis event in thestate and regularly attracts the world’s best up-and-coming talent. Forticket information, call (606) 224-2276.
