The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team has signed a trio of Ohio standouts for the upcoming season, head coach Warren Lipka announced Tuesday. Aimee Brown of Cincinnati, Melinda Buemi of Westerville and Susan Ledzianowski from Mentor, have each signed a national letter of intent and will join the team when school resumes in the fall. “We’re very excited to have these three student-athletes join our program,” Lipka said. “All three players are quality players that will add a lot to our team.”
Brown, a graduate of Cincinnati’s Turpin High School, was the team’s second-leading scorer, and helped the squad to a No. 6 national ranking after winning the Ohio state championship. An all-conference and all-state player during her high school career, Brown also played with the GSE Cardinals club team.
Buemi played her high school soccer at Westerville’s North High School, following in the footsteps of current Wildcat and former North standout Brooke Hergesell. Buemi was named all-conference and all-state and earned the Coaches’ Award after starting all four seasons, helping North to a No. 3 ranking in the USA Today poll. A member of the Express club team, Buemi was a member of four state championship teams and one regional championship team, earning her a spot on the Midwest Region Team in both 1996 and 1997. Ledzianowski, a midfielder at Mentor High School, was named first-team All-Ohio after leading her team in assists as a junior. A member of the Cleveland Cobras club team, Ledzianowski helped the team to a third-place finish at the 1995 Regional Tournament after winning the state cup in both 1995 and 1996. A member of the Region II Olympic Development (ODP) team, she also travelled to Holland, England and Iceland as a member of the Ohio ODP team.
The women’s soccer team returns to practice in mid-August when the players return to school and opens the season with an August 22 exhibition at Wright State. The regular season begins Sept. 4 when the Wildcats play host to regional foe Xavier.
