LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky track and field teams will host the Rod McCravyMemorial meet starting Friday, Feb. 5, at Nutter Field House. The Wildcatswill compete against teams from East Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky, GeorgiaTech, Louisville, Memphis, Miami (Ohio), Mississippi, Mississippi State,UNC-Charlotte and Wallace State.
The meet honors McCravy who was a Kentucky track athlete from Louisville.He died in his sleep in 1987 at age 19.
“A meet named in Rod’s honor enables us to remember him, as well asprovide an on-going opportunity to speak to our athletes about Rod and thepositive influence he had on everyone who knew him,” UK head coach DonWeber said.
The men’s pole vault and shot put and women’s shot put events will takeplace on Friday evening, beginning at 7 p.m. All other events are onSaturday, Feb. 6, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Former Track and Field Athletes Reunite
In conjunction with the Rod McCravy Memorial, there will be a reunion oftrack and field athletes from as far back as 1946. The partial list ofattendees includes Bob Whelan, Lisa Breiding, Jim Green, Valerie McGovernand current assistant coach Bernadette Madigan.
A dinner will take place on Saturday night at the Radisson beginning at 7p.m. Speakers include Kentucky Director of Athletics C.M. Newton andcurrent head coach Don Weber, as well as the past two track and field headcoaches, Press Whelan and Bob Johnson.
