MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – UK drops first game of the season 11-6 to coastal Carolina Conway, S.C.—Pitcher Ron Deubel tossed a four-hitter and struck out nine Kentucky batters to lead Coastal Carolina to a 11-6 win Saturday at Coastal Carolina Baseball Stadium. UK dropped to 2-1 while Coastal Carolina improved to 1-2.

Deubel (1-1) pitched seven strong innings for the win, allowing only two earned runs. UK’s Jason Chaney (0-1) allowed six earned runs on nine hits. UK freshman Brandon Webb made his second apperance of the season in relief, allowing three hits and two runs in three innings. Freshman Josh Owens pitched the eighth inning, allowing a solo home run to Chris Carter.

Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brian Jozefowicz had a leadoff single and Dorian Cameron followed with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt, Jeremy Samatas hit a two-run single to center to give the Chanticellers the early lead.

UK was held scoreless until senior Mark Murphy slapped a leadoff home run in the third inning over the scoreboard in right field. It was the first home run for the Wildcats this season. After sophomore Andy Green drew a walk, sophomore Aaron McGlone knocked him in with a single to tie the game at 2-2. Catcher Josh Loggins struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. The inning continued when Jason Colemire reached on a Coastal Carolina error, scoring Loggins and McGlone.

UK’s lead didn’t last long as Coastal Carolina rallied in the bottom of the inning for four runs of its own. Steve Tylke gave the Chanticleers a 5-4 lead with a three-run homer, his third in the last three games. Two outs later, Chris Clay hit a solo homer to right field. Coastal Carolina added two more runs in the fourth. Ricardo Ayala had a leadoff double and scored on Dorian Cameron’s double. Tylke followed with a RBI single up the middle, increasing the lead to 8-4.

UK squandered an opporunity in the eighth inning to get back in the game. Green had a bases-loaded single that scored Jason Colemire and Justin Bunch. After a David Cheatle walk, McGlone hit a ball to shortstop that forced Cheatle at second and ended the inning. Cheatle, who has multiple hits in all three games, led the Wildcats with two hits. The two teams will complete the two-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
