STARKVILLE, Miss. – The 23rd-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis team picked up a big win on Monday, topping the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs, 5-4.
With the win, the Wildcats snap their two-match losing streak and MSU’s five-match home win streak. The Cats up their record to 7-2, while the Bulldogs drop their first match of the season and fall to 4-1.
UK’s Carolina Mayorga and Christy Sigurski grabbed three-set wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, to lead the Cats to victory. Mayorga topped 81st-ranked Amelie Detriviere, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Sigurski edged Anka Vasiloaica, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3.
Kelly Brown also claimed a singles win for the Cats, and Brown and Massoumeh Emami and Mayorga and Brooke Skeen grabbed doubles wins. The tennis Cats return to the courts on Friday, when the Lady Razorbacks of Arkansas visit Lexington for a 2 p.m. match in the Hilary J. Boone Indoor Tennis on the UK campus.
