The 20th-ranked University of Kentucky men’s tennis team (15-9, 3-6) fell to the 22nd-ranked Tennessee Vols (12-4, 6-4) 5-1, Wednesday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. The match was played indoors due to heavy rain at the 3 p.m. starting time.
Three athletes on the Vols’ roster are named Mark-Mark Fitzpatrick, Mark Parsons and Mark Way. The ‘Marks’ claimed victories in the top three singles spots for the Vols.
UK’s Dan Spaner scored the only point of the match for Kentucky by defeating UT’s Paul Podbury at number four, 7-5, 6-4. His overall season record is 17-8. Kauffmann broke his four-match winning streak in a three-set match loss to UT’s Mark Way, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. In doubles action, Kentucky handed the Vols a loss when sophomore Johan Hesoun and senior Cedric Kauffmann defeated Tennessee’s Paul Podbury and Juan Gamboa, 9-8 (12). But Kentucky could not maintain the doubles point with losses at number one and number three. The Wildcats will battle another SEC opponent on Friday when they take on the 19th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks at 1 p.m. (NOTE TIME CHANGE: originally scheduled for 3 p.m.) at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.
