LEXINGTON, Kty. – The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team defeated Indiana 5-1 and Cincinnati 6-0 in a Thursday double-header at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.
In its first match of the day, the Wildcats (11-4, 1-1) fresh from their first SEC road win over Arkansas 4-3 on Tuesday, lost the doubles point to Indiana. Indiana won at the No. 1 and 3 spots but, UK’s senior duo of Dan Spaner and Cedric Kauffmann defeated Indiana’s Andrew Held and Scott Lippitt 8-5 at the No. 2 spot.
UK returned strong in singles action to sweep the first five matches; the sixth match was suspended. Kentucky junior Patrik Johansson defeated Indiana’s Ian Arons 7-6, 7-2 and wrapping up at the same time to clinch the win over Indiana, UK’s Johan Hesoun beat Indiana’s Held 6-4, 7-6(3).
In the second match, held at 7 p.m., UK blanked the Bearcats in singles action for a 6-0 win. UK’s Fluitt and junior Ariel Gaitan knocked off their opponents in two set matches at the first and second spots. Kentucky’s Spaner put away Cincinnati’s Jon DeCurtins, younger brother of Cincinnati’s coach Brett DeCurtins, in a three set match 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
The Wildcats are on the road for the next six matches. Its first stop is at Samford in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday, March 16.
