HATTIESBURG, Miss. – UK Gives Up 15 Runs and 17 Hits in 15-10 Loss to Southern Mississippi Jeremy Schied hit a grand slam with the score tied in the fifth inning to break the game open as Southern Mississippi beat Kentucky 15-10 at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss. It was the team’s first-ever meeting.

The team’s combined for 25 runs and 35 hits in a game that lasted three hours and 23 minutes. UK had season-high’s for hits (18) and runs (10).

Kentucky (2-3) tied the game, 3-3, in the fifth when John Wilson grounded into a double play and Aaron McGlone scored. Southern Mississippi (2-2) responded in its half of the inning. After a leadoff walk, Brady Mills and Nahum Renteria loaded the bases with back-to-back singles. Schied then hit his first career grand slam, the second Kentucky has given up the past two games, to give the Golden Eagles a 7-3 lead and eventually the victory.

Southern Mississippi took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Cliff Wren. Scott Cheek knocked Wren in with an RBI single.

UK scored its first run in the third thanks to an RBI single by McGlone that scored Andy Green. McGlone has an RBI in all five games. UK cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth with a two-out rally sparked by back-to-back singles by Mark Murphy and Andy Bendix. Andy Green knocked Murphy in with a single, one of his three hits.

After Schied’s grand slam, UK got a run in the sixth to trim the lead to 7-4. Southern Mississippi scored three runs in sixth and four more in the seventh to take a commanding 14-4 advantage.

UK got within 14-9 in the eighth inning with five runs on five hits. The Wildcats sent 9 batters to the plate before recording their first out. David Cheatle, McGlone and Green all had RBI singles in the inning. Southern Mississippi’s Jordan Nilsen hit a solo homer in the eighth inning and UK’s David Cheatle slapped a homer in the ninth to round out the scoring.

Junior Jason Chaney, 0-2, took the loss, allowing seven runs and nine hits in 4.1 innings. Chaney recorded a career-high four strikeouts. Freshmen Brandon Webb, Josh Owens, Jon Hooker and Austin Madison all saw action on the mound.

Cheatle went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs. Cheatle, who’s hitting .524, had his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Josh Loggins, Mark Murphy and McGlone also had three hits.

Southern Mississippi’s Danny Shupe, 1-0, got the win, allowing six runs and seven hits in relief of starter Eric Adams. The two team’s will conclude the two-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
