WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team had a stellar day at the Rolex Region II Indoor Championships on Friday, as all of UK’s entrants into the event picked up wins.
Massoumeh Emami topped Simone Kaiser of Appalachian State 6-2, 6-1, Kelly Brown ousted Tennessee’s Vinny Seiverling 6-2, 6-2, Christy Sigurski upset 67th-ranked Jessica Zaganczyk of North Carolina 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 6-2, Brooke Skeen eliminated Ioana Plesu of Duke 6-1, 6-4, and Shannon Stafford posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sarah Hawkins of UNC. All five advance to second round action on Saturday.
Jackie Spicijaric also picked up two qualifying wins to make the main draw, but was ousted by Christina Ladyman of Maryland 6-0, 6-1. In doubles action, UK’s top-seedes duo of Brown and Emami dropped an 8-5 decision to Meiling Parks and Agnes Wiski of Tennessee. Skeen and Sigurski teamed up to top Kaiser and Danyell Fox of Appalachian State 8-6, while Stafford and Spicijaric knocked off Ladyman and Betsy Card of Maryland 8-5.
Play continues tomorrow, with the finals set for Monday.
