The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team defeated Auburn 8-1 to gain its first Southeastern Conference victory of the season Friday.
The 34th-ranked Wildcats (5-3, 1-3 SEC) swept all doubles matches and dropped its lone match in the No. 4 singles contest.
Kentucky did not give up more than two games in four of its singles victories. UK’s Kelly Brown defeated Ali LaGrange in the No. 1 match, 6-0, 6-2, and No. 2 Kathy Herring dominated Auburn’s Heidii Stewart 6-1, 6-0. Massoumeh Emami overcame Caroline Thompson 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, and No. 5 Caroline Kirk beat Carolyn Kozlowski 6-0, 6-1.
Wildcat Brooke Skeen came back to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, over Tara Fitzmorris.
In doubles play, Brown and Emami blanked Lucy Altman and Tara Fitzmorris at No. 1 singles, 8-0. No. 2 Herring and Kirk won 8-2 over Stewart and Kozlowski. UK’s Christy Sigurski and Brooke Skeen defeated LaGrange and Summa Edwards 8-4.
With the loss, Auburn falls to 2-8 on the season, 0-6 in the SEC.
The Wildcats next travel to Tuscaloosa to face SEC rival Alabama on Sunday, March 8.
