LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior Nathan Kent pitched the first complete game of his career andjuniors Aaron McGlone and Breck Price extended their hitting streaks, butKentucky could not overcome two runs in the 10th by the Commodores andlost, 3-2.
Kent and Vanderbilt starting pitcher Mike Byrd dueled until the seventhinning when the Commodores scored first. Center fielder Alvin Duke led offthe inning with a single and advanced to second on another single by secondbaseman Scott Vanderhoff. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Dukescored on left fielder Aaron Fausett’s RBI single.
Kentucky answered in the bottom of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter WillCrumbaugh opened the inning with a single up the middle. Designated hitterJason Wolfe singled to put men on first and second. The runners advanced oncenter fielder Beau Moore’s sacrifice bunt, and the Wildcats tied the gameon third baseman Nate Linder’s sacrifice fly.
Vanderbilt scored two runs in the top of the tenth inning to take the finallead. With two outs in the inning, shortstop Matt Kata doubled to the gapin left-center and right fielder Hunter Bledsoe walked. Kata scored on awild pitch by Kentucky pitcher Kent that ricocheted off the home plateumpire and rolled near the Commodore dugout and Bledsoe scored on an errorby catcher John Wilson.
Kentucky battled in the bottom of the tenth, manufacturing one run onMcGlone, Wilson, and Price singles. Designated hitter Taylor McInnis hit aline drive to the center fielder to end the inning and give the Commodorestheir first SEC win, 3-2.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, March 13, at 12 p.m. againstVanderbilt at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Ky. A doubleheader will beplayed to finish the series because of expected inclement weather in thearea on Sunday.
