LEXINGTON, Kty. – The University of Kentucky volleyball team returned to action with its first match of the 1998 season as the white team defeated the blue team in the annual Blue/White scrimmage in Memorial Coliseum. The white team defeated the blue team in the five-game match, 4-15, 15-10, 15-5, 15-8, 17-15.

The Wildcats saw solid performances from several underclassmen during the intrasquad match. Sophomore outside hitter Stacey Wallace and junior outside hitter Katie Eiserman led the way for the Wildcats with 20 and 18 digs respectively.

UK coach Jona Braden was pleased with the effort and performance of her team. “I think we saw what we wanted to see tonight,” Braden said. “We saw a lot of different individuals rise to the occasion and lead the team.”

One such individual was freshman outside hitter Meghan Stout who led the Wildcats with a match-best 35 kills. Fellow freshman April Barnhorst also gave an excellent performance recording eight service aces and 10 kills on the night.

“We got to see a lot of different teams playing together tonight,” said Braden. “Now, we need to see how to pull that all together and build as a team.”

The Wildcats will return to action Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. when they take on Morehead State University at Memorial Coliseum in the regular season opener.
